Four (04) Year MD Program

GMU offers the regular Four (04) year M.D. degree program to qualified traditional candidates who already hold a Bachelor’s Degree OR have fulfilled the entire core pre-medical requisites including at least 90 credit hours at the undergraduate level.

Mandatory curricular studies are completed in TEN (10) semesters over a duration of 40 calendar months.

The program is divided into two levels:

  • Basic Medical Sciences (BMS) and
  • Clinical Medicine (CM)

During the first two years (05 semesters), students focus on developing knowledge of the basic medical sciences under the direct supervision of qualified professors. Students are taught the scientific basis of health and disease in courses covering biomedical sciences taught in combination with clinical correlations, utilizing patient and physician educators to maximize the learning experience.

On completing the Basic Medical Sciences and clearing the Comprehensive Examinations, the students are allowed to progress to Clinical Medicine.

The last two (02) years of the program (05 semesters) consist of 80 weeks of mandatory clinical clerkships (rotations) alternating in the areas of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, Community Medicine, Trauma, Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynecology.

GMU students rotate thorough clerkships where they master the core knowledge and skills of each clinical discipline. Medical-decision making and clinical skills are taught, developed and assessed by rotating in hospital ward teams, in medical offices and meeting with senior clinical faculty preceptors who teach, assess and mentor their student charges.

All clinical training is provided at affiliated accredited teaching hospitals in Guyana with clinical clerkship options available at affiliated networks of teaching facilities in the United States and elsewhere for qualified students.
